FAQs about ConnectID
What is ConnectID and how does it work?
ConnectID is a new, secure way to verify your identity, using an organisation you already trust.
Here’s an example of how it works:
- As a Queenland's customer, we are required by law to only sell knives to anyone over 18 years. We are able to verify your age using ConnectID.
- When you choose to use ConnectID, you will then be asked to select your preferred ‘Identity Provider’ for example, your bank.
- You’ll then be redirected to your Identity Provider platform to authenticate yourself.
- Once authenticated, you will need to review the information being requested and give your consent to share.
- Once your verification is complete, you’ll be redirected back to the business to finalise your transaction or sign-up process.
With ConnectID it’s important to remember:
- You are always in control of where and when your personal information is shared.
- ConnectID manages the network, but never sees or stores your personal information at any time.
Why should I use ConnectID?
ConnectID puts you in control of when and where your data is used and shared. It makes sharing data easy and secure, removing the need to type your details into a form or provide more data than necessary.
- You can also access a record of who you have shared your data with.
- ConnectID will be enabled through participating organisations that you already trust. Once ConnectID is enabled with your preferred organisation, there is no need to sign up or download another app to use it.
- ConnectID does not see or store your personal information at any time.
When is ConnectID going to be available?
ConnectID will start rolling out across Australian institutions and businesses in 2023.
Who owns ConnectID?
ConnectID is an initiative of Australian Payments Plus (AP+). AP+ brings together eftpos, BPAY, and NPP Australia as one organisation to shape the future of payments.
Is ConnectID safe?
With ConnectID, you’re in control of what data is shared and when. You only ever share information at your discretion.
For example, when signing up to a service online, you will have the option to use ConnectID. If you choose to use it, you will authenticate with your trusted Identity Provider before any data is shared, ensuring it’s really you. You then review the data to be shared before giving your consent.
ConnectID is accredited by the Australian Government’s Trusted Digital Identity Framework (TDIF) and built to the standards set by the Australian Government.
Who provides my identity?
Each time you use ConnectID, you choose which trusted organisation you will use as your Identity Provider, such as your bank. You need to have an existing relationship with them, and they need to be available in the ConnectID network.
Where is my information stored?
Your identity is stored with the Identity Provider(s) you already have a relationship with, such as your bank. When you share data with another service, they will keep the data under their privacy policy and the Privacy Act.
ConnectID does not see or store any personal information at any time. It’s just the bridge that connects your data to where you authorise it to go.
Do I need to sign up to use ConnectID?
There is no separate sign-up needed. Where you see an option to ‘Verify with ConnectID,’ you’ll be able to verify your identity in real-time using your existing internet banking platform or banking app. You don’t need to register, sign up, or download another app.
Am I eligible to use ConnectID?
To use ConnectID, you must be at least 18 years old.
What kind of data can I share with ConnectID?
With ConnectID, you can share verified information such as your full name, address, date of birth, email address, or phone number. Using ConnectID reduces the need to share sensitive government documents.
When I use ConnectID, who can see my data?
Once you have given your Identity Provider consent to share your information, only the business requesting the information will receive your data.
ConnectID does not collect or store personal information at any time.
